"Going digital" for surgical pathology to computational pathology

Artificial intelligence is set to revolutionize clinical pathology diagnosis, and these new technological developments are grouped together under the term "Computational Pathology". The clinical context of Surgical Pathology will be taught, as well as the central role this medical specialty plays in cancer diagnosis. The various stages in the digital transition from classical Surgical Pathology to Computational Pathology will then be discussed.

Professor Isabelle Salmon graduated from ULB with a Doctorate in Medicine, Surgery and Childbirth in 1985 and obtaining her Diploma of Specialized Surgical Pathology in 1991. With a scholarship from the "Fonds Erasme," she defended a thesis in 1993. From 1999 to 2024, she was head of the Pathology Department at Erasme-HUB Hospital and Professor of Special Pathological Anatomy at ULB.
Since 2010, together with Pr. C. Decaestecker, she has headed the DIAPATH interfaculty research center (CMMI). Since 2016, she has been Director of Strategy and Operations at CurePath, Centre universitaire inter Régional d'expertise en anatomie pathologique hospitalière. In 2024, she was elected President of the Académie Royale de Médecine de Belgique.
President of the ULB Master of Specialization in Pathology, President of the Accreditation Commission for the training of Doctors in Pathology, Vice-President of the Pathology Commission. Past-President of the Société Belge d'Anatomie Pathologique, Past-President of the Belgian week of Pathology, Belgian past-representative to the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (Nomination committee).
